Avoid Becoming a Target for Crime on Holiday
With the summer holiday season now upon us the Safer Stockport Partnership is offering borough residents some useful tips on how to avoid becoming a target of crime.
Becoming a victim of crime while away, whether it’s you, your possessions, or your home, all have the potential to ruin a relaxing break.
The following tips will help residents avoid becoming victims of crime while on holiday:
Before you go – remember to:
- Make the home look occupied. This can be done by asking a trusted friend or neighbour to park a car on the drive and to open curtains during the day and close them at night.
- Cancel the milk and newspaper deliveries.
- Avoid discussing holiday plans in front of strangers.
- Cut the lawn and trim back plants before you go on holiday.
The Journey:
- Do you really need to take all your jewellery on holiday? It would be safer in a secure place at home.
- Never leave luggage unattended at the airport.
- Keep valuables such as cameras and cash in your hand luggage.
- When you arrive at your destination collect your luggage as soon as possible and check to see if it has been tampered with.
At the destination:
- Don’t produce wallets bulging with money when you want to exchange currency.
- Only carry what is necessary when out and about and only wear what jewellery is needed as handbag and jewellery snatches are not uncommon.
Councillor Sue Derbyshire, Executive Member for Communities, said: “By following these helpful tips Stockport residents can greatly reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime while on holiday. We want everyone to have a good holiday.”
